Sunday, February
29th
8:00pm
"And
the winner is..."
Come spend a star-studded evening at the Speakeasy
this Sunday, February 29th (AKA "Oscar
Night"). Leave your TV to its own devices
and come witness the theatrical wonder of award-winning
puppeteer & performance artist, Paul
Zaloom. Zaloom
will be performing his oh-so-provocative Punch
and Jimmy Show which features hand puppets in the wild, bawdy
and ribald tradition of the 450 year old Punch
and Judy show...but the incorrigible cad Punch
is now gay and living with his boyfriend Jimmy
and adopted baby Precious. He battles the LAPD,
the Executioner, Death, the Devil, and organized
religion, perhaps paying the consequences.
Rated X!
The evening also marks the official and most
auspicious launch of Celebrity-Themed Fanzine.
This is the latest literary/artistic endeavor
of artist, author, small-press publisher (and
previous Speakeasy guest host), Darin
Klein.
Printed in a limited edition of 100 handmade
copies, Celebrity-Themed Fanzine is packed with
fiction, essays, poetry and visual art. Contributors
include George Stoll, Jessica Hundley, and Christopher
Russell.
The bookmark artist for the night is Madeleine
Zygarewicz.
A bracing Parlor game is promised and real "punch" will
be served.
Dress to the nines!

WHO IS ZALOOM? Called “one of the most original
and talented political satirists working in the theater” by
the New York Times, Paul Zaloom is an OBIE-winning
puppeteer and performance artist who has written,
designed and performed 11 solo spectacles, including
Fruit of Zaloom, Sick But True, and his latest, Mighty
Nice.
WHAT DOES HE DO? His highly idiosyncratic work utilizes
techniques such as overhead projection, government
document expose, “picture performance”,
and hand, rod, shadow, and dummy puppets. He is best
known for his found object manipulations, where he
operates tools, toys, packaging material, kitsch,
and other debris in rapid fire, satirical vignettes
about our swell contemporary life.
WHAT ELSE? Since 1992, Zaloom has
appeared on the Emmy winning TV show Beakman’s
World as Beakman, the wacky scientist who answers
viewers’ questions
about science, nature, and the world around us; he
also tours the stage show, Beakman Live! Zaloom co-wrote
and narrated an official selection at the 2003 Slamdance
Film Fest, In Smog and Thunder, a humorous mockumentary
about a fictional war between L.A. and San Francisco,
based on paintings by Sandow Birk. He's also a designer
of theme park attractions, a visual artist, and a
teacher.

Madeleine
Zygarewicz
Born
in Paraguay, Madeleine Zygarewicz grew up in the
San Francisco Bay Area where her appreciation of
printed matter and books was fostered at an early
age. She received her interdisciplinary degree
in BookArts, Photography & Multimedia at Mills
College in 2000. Shortly after, she had a residency
at the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany to print
a collaborative book, Body of Text, with Xochitl
Oliva and Kelly Wellman. That autumn, she took
the train to Los Angeles, arriving at Union Station
where she began her love for the city of angels.
Her artist's books feature
writing and imagery that explore such themes as journeys,
love, gender,
socialization and identity. She is fascinated how books
create an intimate relationship between the creator
and reader. Currently, Madeleine resides in Los Angeles,
where she works as a letterpress printer at Century
Guild Press and an assistant at The Melville Press.
She plans to establish her imprint, Panorama Press.
