The June Speakeasy begins with a rousing parlor game, followed by readings from our two featured authors, both brought to us by Bloomsbury (www.bloomsburyusa.com). Chelsea Handler will read from her provocative memoir, My Horizontal Life and Michael Joseph Gross will present his compelling treatise on fandom, Starstruck: When a Fan Gets Close to Fame . The evening will conclude with a live acoustic set by singer-songwriter Holly Ramos (www.hollyramos.com). Rick Petrea designed the June bookmark, 21 st Century Red Riding Hood .

Actress and comedian Chelsea Handler was born in Livingston, New Jersey and has toured the country doing stand-up. Now settled in Los Angeles, she regularly performs live at the Comedy Store and Improv. She has also participated at the Montreal Comedy Festival and the Aspen Comedy Festival.

She is the new Tonight Show correspondent and one of the stars on Oxygen’s hit comedy Girls Behaving Badly.  Part Sex and the City and part Candid Camera, the show boldly blurs the line between laughing with someone and laughing at someone. In every episode, the all-female cast pulls off a series of outrageous caught-on-tape pranks on unsuspecting marks. Chelsea has guest-starred on programs such as Reno 911, Spy TV, My Wife and Kids, The Bernie Mac Show, and The Practice and most recently appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.   Her stand-up has also been televised on VH1’s Love Lounge, Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, and HBO’s broadcast of the Aspen Comedy Festival. She can be seen weekly as a regular commentator on E!.

Chelsea's first collection of short stories, My Horizontal Life, is publishing in June 2005 by Bloomsbury USA, and has been sold in sixteen countries.

Michael Joseph Gross has written for the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Atlantic Monthly, Entertainment Weekly, Elle, the Nation, and many other magazines and newspapers. He won PEN/New England's 2002 Discovery Award fornonfiction. He lives in Los Angeles, CA.
Holly Ramos, superstar NYC DJ of GREENDOOR fame and front woman of the band FUR, now performs as front woman of her solo project. Holly has played guitar for Joey Ramone at his Christmas show. She co-wrote the songs "Cigarettes and Violets" on Jesse Malin's The Fine Art of Self Destruction cd and "God's Lonely People" on his newest The Heat cd. Her last cd was produced by Malin and features Ryan Adams, along with Iggy Pop's drummer Paul Garisto and Robbie William's bass player Fil Izler. Holly has performed everywhere from CBGB's and Jackie 60 to the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City, and has toured the US and Europe. Holly's experience of growing up punk is quoted in the American Hardcore, the definitive book on the history of hardcore punk music by Steve Blush. She can be seen acting in the principal role of Natalie in the indie cult feature Margarita Happy Hour, directed by Ilya Chaiken as well as starring in this year's official Sundance Film Festival selection, The 100 Lover's of Jesus Reynolds, also directed by Chaiken.

The LA Weekly's, Steven Leigh Morris commented on the "riveting sensuality" of her work; Variety's Julio Martinez called her work "Outstanding"; AP music magazine called her "a star already"; and David Noh in Film Journal International compared her to Warhol superstars Andea Feldman and Patti D'Arbanville; The NYC underground crowd agrees that her sound is like some weird sin that mixes johnny thunders and patsy cline... www.hollyramos.com

Rick Petrea is a Southern artist living in Savannah, Georgia. A self-proclaimed recluse ("too many prima donnas in the art community") he was, nevertheless, encouraged by folk artist, Grace Kelly Laster to "Take your art to the people." His work has close ties to Art Brut, Outsider, and Visionary artists, and can be referred to as Marginal Art (that gray area of definition that lies between Outsider Art, and normal mainstreet art). He states, "In my humble opinion, the most interesting art produced today is by the self-taught artists, and the California Lowbrow artists which I believe have much in common." Known mainly for his figurative drawings, paintings, and small sculptures, he occasionally makes abstract assemblages and sculptures, as well. In 2004, Petrea showed at the Raw Arts Festival, Candid Arts Trust Gallery in London, England. More recently, he has shown at the WhoFest, Spruill Gallery, Atlanta, Ga. In June/July 2005, he will be represented in the "From Deconstruction to Neoconstruction" exhibition at the Vienna Congress Center in Vienna, Austria, and in 2006, the inaugural exhibition of the Shoes Or No Shoes Museum in Kruishouten, Belgium.
