This month's bookmark by:
Karen Velas

Karen Velas is a bird lover, and is currently taking an extensive bird biology course from Cornell, with the intent to possibly study ornithology for graduate school. She graduated from the California Institute of the Arts in Spring 2003 with a BFA in photography. While in school, she made a large scale installation which created a living environment for a fictional character as well as miniature nature dioramas using her photography as the two-dimensional backdrop. Concurrently, she was a collaborator, researcher, and partner in the creation of the (currently in transition) Velaslavasay Panorama's Avian Alcove. She works at Otis, where she maintains the printmaking lab and supervises the students who use it. She is also a volunteer at the Wildlife Waystation, where she primarily works in the bird section, feeding and cleaning cages.

Sunday, May 30th 8:00pm

The Speakeasy takes an avian turn this month when we welcome Daniel Cooper of the Audubon Society and bird-enamored artist, Karen Velas. Our game for the night, Homing, will test your knowledge, or, well, guessing skills about bird habitats in our fair state. Daniel Cooper's book, Important Bird Areas of California, will be available for sale courtesy of Book Soup. We will stir up some Cactus Wren Coolers. The password is Dodo.

Daniel S. Cooper (A.B., Harvard 1995; M.S., UC Riverside 1999) is the Director of Bird Conservation for Audubon California, the state office of the National Audubon Society. His research focuses on bird distribution in California, with a particular emphasis on native bird communities in southern California, and has been published in Biological Conservation, Western Birds, and other journals. An avid birder since early childhood, Dan has traveled widely in the U.S. and abroad conducting fieldwork. In January 2004, Audubon California released Important Bird Areas of California, a book Dan has worked on since late 2000. Dan is based in Los Angeles, California.
