Karen Velas
Karen Velas is
a bird lover, and is currently taking an extensive
bird biology course from Cornell, with the intent to
possibly
study ornithology for graduate school. She graduated
from the California Institute of the Arts in Spring
2003 with a BFA in photography. While in school, she
made
a large scale installation
which created
a living environment for a fictional
character as well as miniature
nature dioramas using her photography as the two-dimensional
backdrop.
Concurrently, she was a
collaborator, researcher, and partner in the creation
of the (currently in transition)
Velaslavasay Panorama's Avian Alcove. She works at
Otis, where she maintains
the printmaking lab and supervises the students who
use it. She is also a volunteer at
the
Wildlife Waystation, where she primarily
works in the bird section, feeding and cleaning cages. |

artist, Karen Velas. Our
game for the night, Homing, will test your knowledge,
or, well, guessing skills about bird habitats
in our fair state. Daniel Cooper's book, Important
Bird Areas of California, will
be available for sale courtesy
of Book Soup. We
will stir up some Cactus Wren Coolers. The password
