Sunday October
26, 2003
Sunday, October
26th, Smart Gals monthly
"semi-literary" salon, the SPEAKEASY
celebrates visual artist
and writer Georganne Deen, creator
of the recently published
Western Witch, Season of the.
Georganne Deen is a delight to listen to,
and so below you will
find all you need to know about her work, her
world and the night ahead, in her own words.
There are many promises to be fulfilled
this month, and we
hope not to break any of them. With the understanding
that it may not happen at all,
we dare say Georganne may
be performing musically as
the Gorgon Sisters, but she will most definitely
perform a Halloween morality tale that
will surely frighten
your hairline back a few inches.
The evening will kick off with an Old Maid
Tournament. The champion will win an alternative
original bookmark painting. There will
also be a booby prize
for the Old Maid "loser" which may prove
to be better than the winner's as it is
much looser and less
up-tight. Of course,
we will be sipping a secret concoction, The
Sweet Old Maid, created especially for
this occasion.
Mr. Uncertain
will be at the piano.
Copies of Georganne's
book will be available for
purchase courtesy of Book
Soup.
For those not yet in the know, the SPEAKEASY is
a monthly mixer with
guest hosts, local artists, parlor
games, conversation and moonshine. Come
see for yourself.

...and
now a word from Georganne Deen
I am known as a visual
artist but I have written poetry longer than I've
drawn pictures. I only
started drawing because no one would read
my poems anymore (after
about the 5th grade or so).
The first person to publish a
poem of mine was Thurston
Moore and I was already over half a
century old. Then
I had the great fortune to have a
book of poetry,
art and
music published,
Western Witch, Season
of the, by
Viggo Mortensen,
who seems to
appreciate my
work as much as he loves to root for the
underdogs of this world.
Witness his beautiful
publishing concern: www.percevalpress.com
About my artwork: probably my least
favorite artistic expression is that of
the confessional.
But unconsciously I am forever trying to sort out
my mistakes, divest
myself of some unpleasant thought
forms or give some believability
to anxious hopes by
bringing them into the light of day. So
even if I said that I was just painting George
Jones jumping off a cliff in
a Louis Vuitton jumpsuit, I’d later
realize that I had illustrated
my urge to have sex
with my dad or something. It’s kind of a drag
but I’m resigned. I
don’t seem to have anything that the rest
of the modern world isn’t
crawling with. See for yourself:

About the bookmark: I am hoping
to build up my empire, Western Witch, with
modest notions. One of them is to create
individual perfumes for persons
who send me an article of clothing which
is saturated in their
scent. This bookmark
is an idea for an advertisement
of this said idea. I
will also deliver a morality tale with horrifying
visual aids which I once laid upon an awestruck
gathering at the Hammer Museum for their Ghost and
Horror Night. If I get the nerve to perform musically
at the Smart Gals Soiree, it will be
a first for me. My friend Mackie Osborne
and I will try to be The Gorgon
Sisters, if only just for this one night. |
