This month's bookmark entitled:
"Which Came First?"
by Amy Inouye

What could possibly happen when two spoken word artists, one Sly Crooner and the mother of Chicken Boy gather forces in the same room? Well, we don't exactly know, but we're ready to find out. The September Speakeasy features two of our favorite local poets, Ms. June Melby and Mr. Brendan Constantine, flanked by the Swank love songs of Geoffrey Tozer (that Sly Crooner), topped off with a brand new bookmark by graphic designer Amy Inouye. We will be serving up some secret tipplers, toss out a parlor game or two, and mingle until we can mingle no more. Won't you join us?

June Melby is a poet, composer, and comedian who has been heard on National Public Radio, published in National Lampoon Magazine, the LA Weekly, in numerous anthologies, and in three chapbooks including Tub Toys on FarstarFire Press. She has had sold-out performances in London, Munich, Hamburg, Amsterdam; was the winner at Edinburgh National Poetry Day Poetry Competition, and headliner at the Bristol Int‚l Poetry Festival. Her U.S. performances include: The UCLA Armand Hammer Museum; Beyond Baroque; The Seattle Bumbershoot Arts Festival; Seattle Poetry Festival; and the Nuyorican, The Knitting Factory, and CBGB's, in New York City. She recently released a full-length studio album of spoken word and music with her band, June Melby and Her Future Enemies which is available on her website:

.

It Is true that June was raised on a miniature golf course In the Midwest which her parents still own.

Brendan Constantine was born in Los Angeles and raised in a household where poetry was a tradition. Over the years his work has appeared innumerous journals most notably Artlife, The Cider Press Review, Directions, StellaZine and TheUnderground Guide To Los Angeles, which spent nine weeks on the Los Angeles Times Best Seller list. Recently a portion from his 1999 Pushcart nominated collection Dante’s Casino was selected as essential reading as part of Antioch University’s MFA in Poetry curriculum. Other books include: Antenna(1997 Past Modern Press), Return to IKNOWEXACTLYWHATYOUMEANSVILLE (1998 Inevitable Press), and One Matador (2000 Inevitable Press). A fifth collection entitled Hyenas 57 is a finalist in the National Poetry Series. In addition to teaching his popular adult poets workshop, this fall Brendan will begin his term as Poet In Residence at the Downtown Business Magnet High School. He lives in Hollywood with his cat Maggie.

Geoffrey Tozer was born with a martini in one hand and a grand piano in the other music and swank have always been central to his life. Breastfed by mom and given a deep grounding in jazz and blues by dad he absorbed the masters: Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer and Warren Zevon. At age 6 he bought his first Armani tuxedo. After
mesmerizing the Manhattan piano bar crowd he oozed West to California convinced that palm trees and swank could mingle effectively. While writing music and songs for movies (Car 54 Where Are You?, Sensations, 9 Ninjas, When The Party’s Over, The Dress) he put together his own band. The Swank Pharaohs were born and the sly crooner has never looked back.
