Yes, it's election season at
the Speakeasy. John Powers, critic-at-large for
NPR's Fresh Air, and deputy editor of the LA
Weekly joins forces with David Rees, creator
of Get Your War On for a scintillating evening.
Powers will discuss his book, Sore Winners
(And the Rest of Us) in George W. Bush's America.
Rees will, with the aid of an overhead projector,
disseminate the various strips and layers of
his latest work, Get Your War On Two.
The bookmark artist is Christoper Russell, creator
of the Bedwetter zine.
We'll be serving a round of freshly concocted
Sore Winners on the rocks.
The password is "Operation: <insert
tough-ass name we will soon learn> here".
Books will be available for purchase courtesy
of Book Soup.

John
Powers presents and signs:
Sore Winners (And the Rest of
Us) in George
Bush's America
Welcome to our world, where the dollars are green,
the terror level is orange and everyone is seeing
red. This is America as it exists under the reign
of our 43d president, wrapped up in a most irreverent,
entertaining and highly informative book. No cultural
stone is left unturned, from Hello Kitty to Hamid
Karzai, as Powers guides us through the ideas, values
and characters that have defined George W. Bush's
America. In addition to being critic-at-large for
NPR's Fresh Air, Powers also serves as deputy
editor of the L.A. Weekly, where he writes a media/culture
column called "On". (Doubleday Books) |
David
Rees was
working at MAXIM magazine when the events
following 9/11
led him to start
his political cartoon "Get Your
War On." The scathing,
profane satire
about the war on terrorism became an internet
phenomenon and
thrust David
into the national media spotlight. The series
has been collected
in two
books. "Get
Your War On" also appears
in every issue of Rolling Stone.
David's other comics include "My New
Fighting Technique is Unstoppable," "My New
Filing Technique is Unstoppable," and "Adventures
of "Confessions
of Saint
Augustine Bear." David
donates all the author royalties
from "Get
Your War On" to Mine Detection
and Dog Center Team #5, a crew of ex-mujahideen deminers
in western
Afghanistan.
